Most common foot conditions

Corns and calluses

These are hard painful areas of skin that develops on the skin in response to pressure or friction as the skin tries to protect the underlying area from injury. Thet often occur due to wearing ill fitting shoes, having sweaty feet and standing for long periods during the day.

In growing toe nail

This painful condition occurs when the side or corner of the nail digs into the skin on the toes. The skin can be reddened, inflamed and also contain pus. It can be caused by wearing ill fitting foot wear and from cutting the toe nail incorrectly. Toe nails should be cut straight across and not down at the corners. An injury to the toe can also result in an in growing toe nail.

Verruca

This is a plantar (foot) wart which is caused by HPV virus that enters the skin via a cut or scrape. They are common in children and young adults as they have not yet acquired immunity to the virus. It is a highly contagious virus which can be contacted through direct skin to skin contact and imamate objects such as towels and walking barefoot in communal areas such as gyms and swimming pools. Verrucae appear as small white bumps on the skin which may have black dots in the centre. They can cause discomfort and or pain.

Athletes Foot (tinea pedis)

This is a common fungal infection which usually begins in between the toes. It often occurs in people whose feet become sweaty whilst confined in tight / ill-fitting foot wear. It is contagious and can be spread via towels, clothing and walking in communal areas.

The skin can start peeling or cracking, it can become inflamed and cause itching and burning sensations. Blisters and dry scaley areas can spread between the toes, sole of foot and up the sides of the foot.

**NB. Extra precautions need to be taken if any of these conditions affect people suffering with diabetes mellitus as complications can occur.**
